Prior to working in Kenya, Teri’s career was in education and marketing. She taught school and later worked for Los Angeles Magazine (ABC) and Cosmopolitan Magazine (Hearst Corp) in account management. Teri was inspired by James Ole Kamete, a Maasai with an interest in bringing education to his community. She promised to return 10 years later, when her children were grown, and founded Africa Schools of Kenya (ASK), a non-profit organization enriching the lives of the Maasai by facilitating the development and implementation of educational programs while respecting the Maasai traditions and cultural way of life. When Teri returned to Kenya, she helped James with his dream to build a school. She also helped with the development of several programs including the Student Scholarship Fund, the Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) curriculum that protects girls from female genital mutilation, and, in partnership with the Kenyan Ministry of Health, the mobile Health Wagon staffed by nursing graduates from Esiteti School.
