Located outside Amboseli National Park overlooking Mt. Kilimanjaro, Esiteti Primary School educates 580 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. In 2007, ASK helped fund the construction of the new school, which includes eight classrooms, a state of the art library (subsidized by Land & Life), student dormitories and a teacher’s living quarters. In 2009, the Esiteti community relocated to the new location.
In addition to Kenya’s standard school requirements, ASK founder Teri Gabrielsen, a retired educator, developed extra curricular programs for the school. ASK subsidizes college for any un-accredited teachers, so they are able to become certified. Esiteti is now a fully accredited school with 10 certified teachers.
Over 150 sponsors provide scholarships to students through high school. These scholarships, especially for the girls, provide an opportunity to avoid early marriage and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation. ASK is aligned with 20 schools in the surrounding area, providing educational opportunities to young Maasai students that they would not have without scholarships.
Tuition is $380 a year for K-8th grades and $480–$580 a year for high school, depending on the school. Room and board is included in the tuition fees. Kenyan schools are on a calendar year, January through December, and students are allowed to go home three times a year during holidays.
The Teacher Board at Esiteti School manage all donations toward the Scholarship Fund, and they decide which students qualify. Scholarship criteria is not only based on exemplary grades, but also orphaned children are considered.
